I got the regular DivX stuff and I have no reason to believe it put
spyware on my machine. DivX Pro does, but it says it does, so there's
really nothing to complain about.

Well, I tried VideoMach, it seems like a great program, but I can only
use it for 30 days and then I have to buy it. Might have another look
at VirtualDub, but it can't read my mpegs made by cmpeg or mpeg2encode.
As for the DivX codec itself, I was greatly disappointed by the quality
and size of the animations it produced, regardless of the settings,
especially compared with what cmpeg can output in plain mpeg-1. I got
by far the best results with Indeo, but all the codecs seem to lack the
sort of options a program like cmpeg has, where it can make better
quality animations at the expense of processing time. Even with DivX on
"slowest" encoding and 2 passes, Video Mach whipped through 160 frames
in a few seconds, and, not to my surprise, the animation was huge and
ugly. I may just stick with cmpeg.

http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main2.html with the plug-in for PNG is a nice
solution. The plugin is in the p.b.u newsgroup 3a82f26c@news.povray.org

You can only use it for non commercial use after the 30 days.

Or even easier, just load the first .bmp and VirtualDub will load in the
rest, set you frame-rate in Video options, select your encoding method
(1-pass quality based with quantizer set to 3.5 (95%) gives small and good
looking files (mostly, experiment with the divx settings to find the optimal
for your anim). Then just save as .avi!
