This is an early preview of a project I've been working on for some time.

It's a cyclic animation, so please view it in cyclic mode.

It's not supposed to be "cartoon-rendered" in the final version (though I
haven't definitely decided yet), but right now it was a nice workaround for
the lacking texturing, lightning, and
details.

Hope you like Al the Alien... :-)

Greetings,

Rune

I like it in this cartoonish way.

I don't like the head. It's ugly (at least from behind). The legs could also
be a bit thicker (more muscular), don't you think?

Very nice...

This particular kind of model probably looks a lot more 'believable' in
cartoon-mode than in a supposedly realistic shot, though -- it's limbs,
shape of head have a rather cartoonish ring to it, so the cartoon-render
actually emphases this and makes it look good.

If you would put it in a life-like environment, it will probably look very
out-of-place.

Nevertheless, it's very nice. :)

I agree it's a little strange - he has a rather large back head. But I think
it makes him "special".

No, actually I like the funny thin cartoony legs. Right now the arms and
legs are simply cylinders. That will be changed later, but I don't think I
will make the legs thicker.

I've used Victor Navone's excellent alien a lot for inspiration. You can see
it here. (Note the thin legs).

But as I said, this is just an early stage. A lot of things will be changed.

I personally think that cartoony 3D animations with a 2D look are cool, but
cartoony 3D animations without the 2D look are even more cool!

Have a look at

http://dwp.bigplanet.com/vnavone/home/

If the alien there had had the 2D look I don't think it had been nearly as
cool...

But then again, it's just my personal opinion :-)

I don't know, I think fully shaded models look better.
See my reply to Marc-Hendrik Bremer.

I think it is possible to make scenes look cartoony without having to make
them 2D-like.

I was sure someone would have mentioned the similarity to the Grinch (who
stole Christmas) character, so guess I have now.
It's not the cartooniness I like, it's the movements. Very nice.
