This wasn't supposed to look like a cucumber, it was supposed to look like
some kind of alien egg (like in the movie, only different).
There's some "jittering" going on around the jagged rim of the broken egg -
it's most obvious at the 4:00 position. Hmmmm...
BTW, the undulating orb returns to its starting configuration when the clock
reaches 1, so it looks smooth in a looping animation. There _must_ be some
good uses for this thing... Possibly globs of liquid in zero-g, molten
metal, or maybe the still "beating" heart of some unlucky miscreant...

Eewww. Now chicks hatching do seem cute.
I didn't see anything wrong with the edge of the shell, but I noticed the blob has
those
typical texturing errors (light-bleed) showing up as triangular areas of lightness.

you know, i like it!!
its a but ewwww, bit in a cool way :)
if you add a floor, and slowy rotate the camera as its animated, it will
look so much better, maybe even add an occasional wiggle to the egg as they
look for to motionless at the moment

I thought that the slightly bigger problem was the way that the green
squiggle in the texture made it obvious that the pigment was fixed in
space and that the alien embryo moved through it. This is obviously
unrealistic - in real objects the texture moves with the object.
I guess that the baby alien is done with blobs, so uv mapping wouldn't
be an option. It might look better without the sharp transition in the
colour_map, since the grey/brown parts of the pigment, with smooth
colour_map transitions, don't look obviously fixed in space.

Yep, that's a problem, all right. I couldn't figure out how to fix it. The
embryo texture is T_Stone11 from "stones.inc" (one day I just looked at it,
and thought "Hey, that looks like somebody's innards!" ) The undulating blob
object does work better with simpler, non-squiggled textures, as you
suggest. I animated 20 gold metallic undulators in space and they looked
alright. I also made a still of a glass undulator with a Metallica logo
inside, and it looked good, too. - Haven't animated a glass one yet,
though - might be a good project for my computer to work on tonight...

This was what I thought looked extremely *good* in this case.
It looks like a creature in some kind of "sack" trying to
get out.
The jitter at 4:00 seems to be a compression artifact (?)
