Was rather disappointed until I noticed the second image ;)
I didn't really expect you to invest time to include grand new
functionality in 3.7 but that's certainly very nice to have.

Call it "easy to use, no parameter tweaking".

Very promising!
Thank you!

Why?
3.7 is the prelude to 4.0, or not? :-)
The "subsurface scattering" is an implementation request and dreamed from many
users.

I got a copy of 3D World the other day (at Bankok airport; I don't see it much in the
US, on the other hand, there aren't many magazine stands in the US...). It had a nice
article on a witch model:
http://www.raph.com/3dartists/artgallery/imagePage?iid=6607

Subsurface scattering was described as an important component of the skin texture.
And looking at the image, it's easy to see how that would be the case.

Nice work moving it to POV!

Dan

I know I shall not want, but... gee, I think I positively, definitely,
absolutely *do* want that :)

whoa! POV-Ray is beginning 2009 with many bangs! XD

whoa! Impressive! Not so much for SSS as for the exquisite 3D sculpting.

OTOH, I think the zbrush generation is much too overcrowded with ugly hags and
muscular nude men. They need a change of pace instead of cheap showing off...
:P

you have the excuse that you need to check
how it will interact with radiosity ;)

OMG, thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!
I'm so glad I bugged Sarah Tariq, now. :-P

I'm really excited about this, myself. Any idea when we might be able to try it
ourselves?

In reading the recent 3D World magazine, it struck me how big a gap has developed
between POV and the top-line tools. It seems to me SSS takes a nice chunk out of that
gap in terms of realistic texturing.

Interesting Marc Levoy is an author of this early paper on the subject:
http://graphics.ucsd.edu/~henrik/papers/bssrdf/

I surveyed a class with him when I was a grad student at Stanford. Graphics wasn't my
field, so I couldn't take the time to do the exercises in the class, unfortunately,
something I now regret. Much more interesting than my research in semiconductor
devices :).
