It's about time :) POV-Ray betas for 32- and 64-bit platforms are
finally back online, hopefully on a more regular basis from now on:
http://povray.org/beta/
The source package is also available for those who want to dive into
the gory intricacies of compiling their own binaries:
http://povray.org/beta/source/
Some of the recent unix-specific bug reports have been addressed, while
others (e.g. display-related) still need to be fixed.
Thanks for reporting on this new beta,
- NC

Linux beta 29 compiles OK on Slackware 12.0 with gcc 4.1.2, boost-1.33.1,
kernel 2.6.21.5-smp.
Created sample scenes from /usr/local/share/povray-3.7/scripts allanim.sh,
allscene.sh and portfolio.sh. Didn't spot any problems.
Cheers, Peter

Using PCLinuxOS here. Kernel 2.6.22.15.tex2, gcc 4.1.1.
Compiles OK and runs fine. Do not work with compiz turned on but that's
something I expected.
I only have rendered one scene to test it, basically some meshes, but using
blurred reflections and the improvement in render times compared with 3.6 is
very good.
Thank you very much for your work and your efforts.
Regards.

I'm trying to figure out why this is....It shouldn't have any idea that
Compiz is even running.
On openSUSE 11.0, I just ran a test of the 64-bit binary, though, and
sure enough, povray segfaults if +D is specified.
Nicolas, is there a build available with symbols enabled for debugging
purposes?

The message in povray is (when rendering with compiz turned on):
"XIO: fatal IO error 0 (Success) on X server ":0.0"
after 32 requests (29 known processed) with 6 events remaining."
At least in my system.
Bye.

On my Slackware 12.0 I have compiz 0.7.6.
With compiz on, and rendering povray-3.7/scenes/portfolio/m_textures.ini,
I can move the Povray display window around with compiz "Wobbly Windows"
effects.
(Though quite why I would want to do this escapes me. Usually compiz is off).
Cheers, Peter

My system (a 64-bit AMD system) just reports a segfault. It's been a
long time since I saw XIO errors like you're seeing, wonder if they're
symptoms of the same problem or different problems?

Is it the case with both the 'povray' and 'povray-gcc' binaries that are
in the beta.29 distribution?

Both povray and povray-gcc generate a segfault here.

We have a gentoo bug regarding display windows appearing transparent,
and I've seen lots of references to this on the net as well. Is this a
known issue that will likely be fixed?
Here's our gentoo bug:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=155289
Also, I'm still getting hangs when the display window comes up (as
mentioned elsewhere here too). I get the following:
Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x64)!
I have to kill -9 the process.
and sometimes also (after above message):
X Error of failed request: BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 18 (X_ChangeProperty)
Atom id in failed request: 0x1e00008
Serial number of failed request: 103
Current serial number in output stream: 106
I got these, I believe, in beta 25 as well. It is intermittent. If
this is also a known issue, let me know.
Thanks! Joe
p.s. please reply to my [obfuscated] email here as well...
