Hm. It should do the job, though. I'm not sure what goes wrong, and as I 
said before I'm on Linux and haven't done any Windows in ages. Perhaps 
you could ask in povray.unofficial.patches.

Of course, you have to tell POV-Ray to close after it is done. Please check 
the section "Special Command-Line Options" in the Windows specific part of 
the documentation: <http://www.povray.org/documentation/view/3.6.1/603/>

If you execute another program, usually the program from within you do so 
will wait until the program it executes terminates. usually you can disable 
this feature, which means you have to look for that in the Matlab documentation.

However, it will be a lot more practical to just tell POV-Ray for Windows to 
terminate after rendering using the "/EXIT" command-line option.
