Is it possible to run photons in two passes, similar to the handy method
used for 2-pass radiosity?
I'm just wondering if I'm going to have to run photons again for a
highres version of my scene, or whether I can just load up the photon
map I've saved at the small resolution.

Yes, it's possible.
See section 3.5.3.2.1 "Photon Global Settings" in the
manual, specifically the save_file and load_file keywords.

Yes, I knew about that, but do the photons adjust adequately when
loading a lowres map at a higher resolution? Since I'm already loading a
map, more photons won't be shot. Will the scene still render the same
result or will it be spotty in some way?
The obvious answer is to try it, I know...I'm in the process of doing
that, but it's taking a while. My scene has been running for 8 hrs
already at 25% of full-size and it's only just over 50% complete. It's
taken about three hours to progress 6%. It'll be a while before I can
run it at a higher resolution (which will itself probably take several
days).
