would you mind, canceling this post and reposting
the binary to pov.binaries.images ? ...

It's not fully clear to me what's going on in this picture, and what you
want. I'd say the shadows look odd. You could remove them with no_shadow for
the cylinder.

Yes, usually we only post pictures or other attachments in the binary
groups, please don't take this personally, but you'll see more cooperative
people that way. ;o)

No photons present. The light beam simply goes up to the reflecting box and
stops, as it will do when without photon mapping. But that isn't the trouble
with this, turns out to be 'intervals' for some reason.
What is seen in the image (it hasn't been cancelled yet) is the beam
projecting onto the side of the mirrored box and we see that reflection.
Just not anything on the before-reflected side where the beam enters the
other light source shadow.
Try adding intervals 9 in front of scattering (at least more than the total
number of lights) and you will see the laser extend farther.
This seems peculiar though, since intervals is now automatic for the most
part and probably shouldn't be having this sort of affect. I'm not certain
of that.
Regardless, ultimately photons are going to be needed to bounce the beam
off.
