A true 'advanced user' can answer 10 out of 10 questions that novice users
post in povray.general ;0

So, if I can type RTFM I'm advanced? :)
The answer is usually correct, just not very nice...

Actually the answer is not correct because there's no answer at all.

In what sense?

Only if you can tell when RTFM is the correct answer. Remember,
the criteria require a perfect score. "Usually" isn't good enough.

Perfection is an impossibility.
But back when I was a newbie (ahem) this was the only answer I had - just like
many others. It does give the solution 9 times out of 10, if you take the
trouble to delve into it.

While the Povray docs are the best I have ever seen there is simply no way
to learn how to be creative by simply reading them. That takes experience
and answering questions in .general takes more that "book" read knowlege to
be able to field all of the questions posted there.

That's strike two !

Ken, the RTFM comment was of course made as a jest. Nobody can give you
creativity and practicing is unavoidable. But what I said was that you _can_ go
beyond the newbie stage using nothing but the manual as the basis.
I still maintain that RTFM _is_ correct. It just means that you're refusing to
share your experience and forcing the asker to find the answer the same way you
did. It's unfriendly and inefficient, but still...
Anyway, let's drop this. I know what reputation I'll earn by RTFM-ing newbies
(and it won't be that of an advanced user)

"RTFM" is not the answer to the question.

Drat! I feel a few stripes have been ripped from my POV-Ray arm patch
now. Anyone for 9 out of ten? Ok, how about 8... or 7 (we'd be
getting closer to not ranking me down). heh-heh-heh
