With the low-level buzz of the possibility of a new version of Moray I
thought I would bring up a topic that has long bugged me, I know this is
probably a very old quip and I don't want to start some flame war here, but
I have to ask. Just why is it that Moray has to use the right handed
coordinate system when Pov-Ray uses a left handed system? I can't count the
number of times I have wanted to add some hand coding into a Moray generated
scene only to forget the right handed system, and give up. I know that many
users of Moray never use the Pov-Ray scene language, but that's not to say
that we all don't. I myself don't use it as much as I would like to but this
small difference has a little to do with why. Don't get me wrong I love
Moray for it's scene layout capabilities and user interface, I couldn't do
without it on most of my scenes. But we can't expect Lutz to follow up every
new patch or even official release of Pov immediately with a new version of
Moray. This small change would make a world of difference to me. Ohh and
please let me know if I have done and done something so stupid as overlook a
"use left handed system" checkbox.

This has been a feature request for as long as I can remember (many years).
Why it still isn't an option in Moray is a great mystery.

Oh well, we can always hope:-)

My guess (perhaps far fetched) is that most other modellers use the
right-handed coordinate system. Of course, I've never used any high-end
modelling programs (for obvious reasons), so this is just a big guess, based
on the fact that in general, games use the right-handed coordinate system,
so I'd assume that most 3D modelling packages do, too. In fact, level
editing is one of the reasons I switched to Moray so easily, and am still
adjusting to POV (I found that switching the coordinate system made POV a
lot easier for me).

Having a left-handed mode for script junkies would be nice, though :-P

No, I'm not saying that Moray should *change* to left-handed system.
I'm just saying that there should be an *option* for left-handed coordinates,
even thought the default would be right-handed.

This is a pretty common misconception about POV-Ray. It (POV-Ray)
happily takes whatever coordinate system you feed it (if you define your
look direction, up/right).

Just because there are a whole bunch of scene files that like to use the
positive z axis as the direction you are looking and y as up, don't
think that POV-Ray is somehow limited.

Personally, I can't quite see the problem. If you are modelling in
Moray, then when you click the render button, POV-Ray makes an image
that looks kinda like what you were modelling. Get out of your rut...
