From Christine Sander.
I downloaded some nice ttf dingbat fonts, and tried one on Moray. The
display gave me just the form I wanted. When I tried to render it, Povray
just gave me a 3-D frame. I tried copying the ttf font file into Povray,
and I tried using caps. Same thing. Are some dingbat ttf files just wrong
for rendering?

Hi Christine Sander, you recently wrote in moray.win:

I believe that POV-Ray has problems with such fonts, at least if the
character you're trying to render is above ASCII 127. I'm not entirely
sure what the problem is, maybe one of the POV gurus can shed more
light on it.

I believe the problem has to do with both characters above ASCII 127 and
some fonts that are referred to as Unicode fonts. For some pretty detailed
info on Pov's limitation in this regard take a look at Jon Cruz's unicode
patch page.

First, let me express my deep gratitude for your helpful remarks. I
continue to be as impressed by POVRAY's users as I am by this wonderful
program. My computer refused to unzip the unipov patch, and so far I have
not been able to get Softext to coax a POVRAY rendering. There is probably
some way to do this. My little Adobe Dimensions 3.0 program had no problem
extruding and rendering the text, and it is apparent that Moray can see the
intended form. It is a shame, because some of these fonts can yield
interesting, complex objects very quickly.

I personaly have had some success in using webding fonts with POV-Ray
but since these were downloaded from the net I have no idea how they
were created and what character encoding was used in their creation.

Ooops ! I just remembered that my success at using these types of
fonts came with using a font utility called Elefont which takes your
font and lets you create a 3D object exportable as a mesh of triangles
or as a .dxf file. You can use 3DWin to convert from dxf to a format
that Moray can use.

You can get elefont here: http://www.armanisoft.ch/

It has a strange interface but some of the tools it offers are pretty nice.

I did just try downloading the UniPatch and had no problems opening
it on my system using winzip. If you would like more detailed info
on font creation and using unicode fonts with POV-Ray I suggest you
contact Jon Cruz through email. He loves talking about them and seems
to be our resident expert on this subject.

THANKS!! Elefont worked beautifully! Couldn't make a "difference" inset
into a wall, but the wonderful overlays make up for it.
