Hi,

a group of 3d modeller programmers have set up a mailing list to
discuss the develpoment of modellers/animators (mainly GPLed ones,
but others are welcome, too).

Anyone who is interested in writing 3d modellers is welcome to join
the mailing list and share any problems, solutions, ideas and thoughts
that might be interesting to other developers.

Infos about the list can be found at:

    http://www.topica.com/lists/3dmodeller

CU there,
Christian

Hy,
it is a really good thing, what you are doing, but let me give some
thoughts to this discussion. I'm engineer and I'm working with
3D-CAD-systems for some years. Did you look at them how they work and
what they are able for ? I think, they should be an example of your
work. Isn't there a free 3-d-Kernel on the web ? (Most CAD-systems have
either parasolids or acis, but I think, they are not free) Not
everything needs to be invented several times.
Perhaps you will have a look at the following 3d-cad-systems:

unigraphics
pro/e
i-deas
catia

good luck with your project, and the greatest thing that could happen
is: make a 3d-modeler as good as those 4 before and give it for free or
say 100$ instead of 20000$/year. that would be a revolution in industry.

I'd really like to see some of the functionality of pro/e implemented in a
(free/low cost) modeller, better still if it's for Linux (as I'm used to
working with the UNIX version on Solaris).

That would be a really good complement to the Linux platform!

You know what'd be really neat? If you posted a webpage with links to all
modelers currently in development that are active on your group.

The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard.

Does anyone know a good free 3d-kernel ? Where have acis and parasolids
been developped ? I do not think in industry, they "smell" academic.
Isn't there perhaps somewhere an old acis- or parasolids-kernel at
universities, that has no copyright of companies ?

It looks as you know exactly what you want. So it would be great if
you'd join our effords.

Yes. One on the list (Steve) is very much looking forward to see that
happen.
