Hmm, it work just fine for me.

Are you sure you are using a program that supports 16 bit per colour
component PNG images?  I know a few that will read any PNG but convert it to
8 bit per colour component.

You can test if it works by using any scene with 8 and then 16 bit per
colour component and simply compare the file sizes.  Even with compression
the 16 bit per colour component image will be larger.
