I am trying to install POV Ray on my linux system. If I try to install it
through an RPM, then I receive an error that says "Package not found
libpng.so.0". I also tried to install using the source files but after I
ran ./install and navigated to the newly copied folder in
/usr/local/share/povray-3.5 I can't run ./configure in the folder as the
instructions said. What am I missing? If this is a RTFM moment then tell
me where in the manual I need to go and I'll do it

There is no official RPM available at the moment so you seem to try
installing an unofficial version. Since i don't know this version i can't
help there. You can get the official Linux version from:

http://www.povray.org/download/

For many years I'm using Povray on a Windows platform. Being new to
linux (Suse 8.2) I tried to install Povray under windows.
On http://www.povray.org/download I found some instructions to install,
but I didn't manage it.
I downloaded povlinux.tgz to a temporary map home/xxx/Temp (where xxx is
the name of the user). Using "tar" as mentioned on the site I get a new
map home/xxx/Temp/Povray-3.5.
Cd to this map and ./install gives nothing.
What is going wrong and where should I put povlinux.tgz when
downloading?

Povray is part of the Suse 8.2 software install. Just install it from
the control manager. Works like a breeze

Thank you for the help. I installed from CD2, but I don't know how to
start the program (or the test.sh script).
I'm sure I have to work on my knowledge of linux...

I hope you are aware that 'gives nothing' is almost as far as possible
from what i would call an accurate description.

This has nothing to do with it. You just have to read the POV-Ray manual
(specifically the part about command line options).

Note that the binary installation is surely not perfect and there are
several places where it could be improved but none the less it should be
possible to install and use POV-Ray on a linux machine for someone with
basic knowledge about computers and POV-Ray.

Maybe you don't have PNG-Support installed. Search for a RPM called
libpng*.rpm on the RedHat CDs. Install it an try again to install
POV-Ray. Or maybe libpng is not called "libpng.so.0". Then a symbolic
link (ln -s) could help you.

This is what I would try,

Keep in mind that Pvray under Linux is a commandline version
To run Povray open a commandline and type
povray [ENTER]
It should give you a short help screen.

To create/edit/alter your sources you can use any ascii editor available
under Linux (and there are plenty, I prefer "kate" )

To render an image type

povray -i<source name> +W640 +H480 +D [ENTER]

It will render and display (that's what the +D is for) at 640 x 480

HTH

Cheers

Ger
