Same here. If you're working as an electrical engineer in the power
industry, you'll likely need to get licensed. Or if you're the project
lead for some product design, you need to be licensed (or whoever signs
off on the design needs to be).

If you're a civil engineer, almost all jobs will require licensing.
However, over here, electrical engineers rarely work on anything related
to safety, so few of them have a license, and the company doesn't care
if they do.

My academic adviser said I'd get good information, and the student
employment office said I'd get better job offers.

Since a student membership is so affordable, I decided to go for it.

Going for my bachelor's in Electronics Engineering. About one year left.

I highly recommend taking the FE exam in the very near future - either
before graduation, or just after.

It is the first step in obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) license.

While you may never get your PE, if you ever want it you will regret not
taking the FE while things were fresh in your mind.

Plus, a lot of states require 4 years AFTER you pass the FE to register
to become a PE.

You do not have much to lose, and it's another mark on your resume to be
an Engineer In Training (EIT).

I am willing to give more info, I just don't want to overload a post
like this.

Go ahead and ask if you have some questions - I'll do my best to answer.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm going to give it a few months first, as
right now I'm a little overloaded between work and classes.

I suppose the bullet point on the resume _may_ help.

I just tend to warn people that you can't be a student member for more
than 8 years - so they should sign up near the end of their undergrad,
so that it doesn't run out while in grad school (where it may prove
quite useful).

Yep. Can't hurt to do the FE (assuming you're in the US). I passed
without studying (but then, I'm smart<G>). My university had a 1 hour
per week seminar for those interested in taking it (different topic
covered each week).

I fell into the boat of not taking it way back when.

I was out of school 12 years before taking it.

I had a LOT of studying to do, but I passed without trouble - tho I
don't know by how much.

I wish I had taken it way back, I would not have had to study so much.

You may have passed without too much studying. Or perhaps some states
are more demanding. I'm sure I got lots of wrong answers. I had no idea
what a lot of the questions even meant.

My undergrad university (fairly low ranked) had a perfect pass rate for
many years. It just wasn't a tough exam.

My understanding is that the exam is basically the same in all states.

I believe that you typically have to only get just more than 50% of the
questions right to pass the exam - tho that can be a challenge.

I don't think the exam is designed to be really hard - it's designed to
weed out the people who just can't cut being an engineer.

If you look at the pass rates -
~75% of first time takers pass.
less than 30% of repeat takers pass.

Those who don't pass it the first time usually don't pass it on the
second or third times. Sure, you have those who had a bad day during
the exam - those are likely the ones in the %30 who eventually pass.

I just need to get my butt in gear to start studying for the PE exam
that I'm signed up for in 2 months.....
