Yeah. "Nomad, take the Gauss rifle" was my first clue.
As far as I can tell, it's like a shotgun, but less damaging.

As far as I can tell, the Shift key doesn't do anything.
But then, just controling the altitude was hard enough. Pressing space
is ment to make you go higher - but doesn't always seem to work...
The Q and E keys do indeed tip the craft sideways, but don't appear to
do anything else. Hell, sometimes even the forward and backward keys
don't seem to be doing anything!

Huh? That rifle will take out a Scout alien with 2-3 shots, a shotty
will never do that. Hit an NK with a Gauss and he should fly back a few
hundred yards.

It's interesting. Everybody I've spoken to seems to think all the
weapons are really powerful, and the game is easy, and you can just
storm through it. I'm seriously starting to wonder if I'm playing the
same game here... :-P
There doesn't seem to be a *huge* difference in power between the Gauss
and the shotgun, so maybe it's psychological. When you fire the shotgun,
it makes a nice bang and fires a visible projectile. The Gauss just
shimmers a bit. Maybe that makes it seem less powerful? Certainly both
guns require an absurd number of shots to take anything down.
(Obviously I tried to avoid using either of them except where necessary.
In other words, when I've run out of ammo for everything else. Which was
mainly during the final battle on the aircraft carrier...)

You seem to be playing a different game to me. Did you update to 1.2?
You should. Not that it should make a difference to the controls of the
VTOL. Try hitting F1 twice for 3rd person view, it's easier to fly around.

More exactly, I believe Steam should.
Is there a way I can tell from the tiny version numbers in the corner of
the setup screen?

...you can DO that??

Of course, forgot you did it that way.

If Steam automatically updated the game to 1.2, then it should read:
1.1.1.6115
But if Steam has updated to the hotfix of 1.21, then I don't know what
the version number will be as I don't have 1.21 installed. The hotfix 1.21
is really only for the multiplayer side of the game so I'm not sure if Steam
would update this.

Yeah sure. It's only the VTOL that has three views, the first view
being inside the cockpit with the full HUD, the second is the same view but
without the HUD, and the third is 3rd person. Ground vehicles only have 1st
and 3rd views, and you can't use it with the player. (You can in the editor
though).

Just tried it. Apparently the Gauss rifle does in fact kill humans.
(Previously I'd only tried in on the aliens, who are unkillable AFAIK.)

The game reports its version as 1.1.1.6156.

Ok, well, research says that that 'is' the hotfix version number. So
you're updated buddy. ;)
And that means that objectives in my map will work. Have a good
weekend. :)
