I suffer from this bug, and it seems that many other do too:

http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=499

The thing is, this bug has been known for well over a year and it has
persisted from driver to driver without being fixed. And it seems ATI
refuses to even aknowledge the problem. Look here:

https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/catalyst_81_linux.html#183417

It's the list of known issues in the linux driver. This problem is not
mentioned, and has never been mentioned in any version of the driver, even
though it has been known for well over a year and many people have complained
about it. As you can see, other problems are aknowledged, but not this one.

  Why, ATI, why?

Because they can't fix it, and don't want to acknowledge that fact?

I've given up hope that the graphics cards vendors will actually start
caring for their fans. Time after time, I've seen release notes state
things like performance improvements on specific games with specific
cards - and it's always the games that are used for benchmarks, and
always the high end rigs (either the most expensive cards, or SLI /
Crossfire), yet not touching bugs or adding usable features.

Heck, even if they would make changes that resulted in performance
improvements for a variety of 3d apps, that would be better... but for a
single game, with a single card? (And testing the new driver on my end
confirmed no improvements in any other apps).

Maybe they have more important things to throw their resources at currently?

I'm sure they'd rather fix some smaller bug in the Windows drivers than this
bug - there's the potential to lose a lot more business with small bugs in
Windows than big bugs in Linux.

That doesn't explain why they don't even aknowledge it.

Do they usually test reported bugs themselves before acknowledging them on
their website? Perhaps they just haven't gone through the internal
processes yet that allows them to officially acknowledge a bug?

Maybe they don't want to discourage other people from ATI? If I was ATI I
wouldn't exactly put at the top of my buglist "Fans don't work and chipset
overheats - known for 1.5 years not fixed"...

On the other hand, maybe they know the bug will go away with new cards - and
the bug is too much effort to fix with current cards. So, in fact, they are
just ignoring it and hope it will go away.

What's your theory? Has anyone tried to actually contact them on the
subject?

It's their official bug reporting system I gave a link to.

The first word I read on that page was "unofficial"...

It's so official that they link to it from their official ati.com
website.

Besides, who do you think that bug reporting system is for? It has
been created for some reason.

Just for Linux people to believe that ATI actually care about you :-)
