I was hoping someone could give me some pointers for putting together realistic
looking faded stone textures, particularly something akin to the marble used
here
http://www.sacred-destinations.com/germany/aachen-cathedral-photos/slides/IMG_0371
I'm relatively new to Povray and so far my efforts at putting together a texture
that doesnt look wildy fake have been less than successful. Any pointers would
be gratefully appreciated.

I have put in p.b.scene-files a collection of stone textures that I have
since I started with POV-Ray somewhen in 1996/97. I don't remember where
I got them, nor who was the original author (and obviously forgot to not
it down back then). In time, I have adapted them slightly to successive
versions of POV-Ray. They are a good basis for further development or to
use just like that.
Enjoy.

To approach this, I suggest to use a layered texture: one of the stone
textures as basic layer, then a semi-transparant one over it to suggest
the wear fade. The wear at the angles is more difficult but can be
approached with the use of a proximity pattern. Over the years, several
have been developed by - especially - Sam Benge and Edouard Poor, in
2009. You should be able to find the threads in p.b.i. in particular.

I am using a newsreader, so I do not have the exact addresses, but in
p.b.scene-files search for the thread: DF3 Proximity Macro 0.95 - Source
and Example by Edouard Poor (september 10th, 2009).
In p.t.scene-files you can find the thread: fast_prox02.inc by stbenge
(august 24th, 2009).
Play with those and see which corresponds best to your personality ;-)
