Hi,
I just came upon blender, which is supposed to use POV-Ray's render engine and
have a modeller look...

Well, it seems very complicated and maybe you know of an easier modeller that
could also do all POV-Ray can, that could use my 3D acceleration for the preview
and that would run on Linux?

Or if you know of a good documentation for using blender?

Thanks,
  Simon

I haven't checked it out in a while. Does it really use POV-Ray's render
engine? I thought it was scanline, but maybe they've changed since...
AFAIK, their documentation costs money (to compensate for free use of the
program).

p.s. Any good freeware 3d modelers for Windows? I'm under Win2K so I don't
have DOS, but I don't have money to spend on Moray or Rhino or stuff like
that. :(

The one I use is Hamapatch. You can find it at:
http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Ginza/6625/soft10.html
Also you can get the help file in english at:
http://www.crosswinds.net/~draven2561/hamapatch/index.html

It's a free program that works with splines, exports (and render) to povray
and megapov (also others), only 428Kb the zip file. Better try it.

More information, plugins, objects, and so on at (follow the hamapatch
links):
http://www.crosswinds.net/~spatch/

Moray is the other modeller I use. You can try it till you can't live
without it (and register as I did, it's not expensive at all)

Blender is (as of two weeks ago) a full-fledged scanline renderer/game
development engine, not a POV-Ray front end.

> Well, it seems very complicated

The interface can be challenging, and rendering realistic scenes can be
a hair-pulling experience compared to the simplicity of POV, especially
when dealing with global illumination and reflections, but some artists
are doing pretty good stuff with it.

Check www.povray.co.uk for a link to a KDE modeler for POV. It's still
wearing diapers at the moment, but it looks promising.

There are some tutorials available, follow the links on the web site.

Oh, I might have been mistaken, I heard that a long long time ago, and I guess I
just never tried to check it out...

No idea...

Yes, sorry, I have become mistaken over the years...

I'm just wondering if it's worth the efforts, I believe it all depends on me...
I just gave it a little try and oh well... I guess it'll take a long time until
I master this thing, I'm not sure if I have the patience...

I just checked this out, seems promising, although I have some cold shivers with
the thought of KDE being used for this...

Indeed, I was playing with some tutorial explaining how to build a very simple
castle...

Thanks,
  Simon

I highly recommend blender, coupled with a dxf to mesh conversion app. I have spent
about 2 weeks messing with it and the modelling options great. I think of it as a
free Rhino. And converting to a mesh (blender can save as dxf files) is easy and
works very well in pov.

I do not use the blender render engine, because it is only scanline, for final
images. I always export and then retexture in pov.

true, the interface is odd, but there are plenty of tutorials (it took me much
longer to get the hang of pov) and it is the same no matter what platform you are
on. I model on a SGI at work at then on win2k box at home. Same file, same
interface.

I couldn't find the modelling tools on Blender so I uninstalled it. If you can
do stuff like Rhino, I might consider getting it again. Does it also have
something like a drape function?
