Ok, here's the problem:
When i render text with the text primitive, sometimes(usualy when i
first add the ttf file i use to my include dir) i get odd characters,
such as boxes(i.e. what's put in place of a non-existant character) and
other characters instead of the text string i put... i change the font
to one that i've used before, and it works just fine, and eventualy the
new font seems to work, but i dont' know why, and i can't usualy wait
for eventualy... Please reply via e-mail if possible... thanks.

I suppose you are using special characters (ascii code > 127) in the
texti. Not all ttf-files define all the characters. If you are using
windows, you can open the ttf-file with the character map program
and see if it defines all the characters you want.

Actully, I seem to get the same problem, and I'm using valid characters.
They even show up in Moray for Windows, but when I render, I get the boxes
and garbage as well. I have found a way around it, tho.. I just use Font3D,
and import into Moray. I does take longer to parse, tho. :(

Maybe you should post the source you used to get that image and maybe
one of us can figure out why. I've never run into the problem myself so
it would be good to know what causes it so I can avoid it.

Well I tried it with several of my own fonts and didn't have any
problem. Then I got a copy of akbar.ttf and with that I got the same
result that you did. The problem isn't with povray, it's in the font. I
also got these error messages when I tried to render it with akbar
Character 83 (0x53) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 101 (0x65) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 99 (0x63) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 105 (0x69) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 97 (0x61) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 32 (0x20) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 97 (0x61) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 101 (0x65) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 97 (0x61) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 101 (0x65) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 99 (0x63) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 101 (0x65) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 32 (0x20) not found in akbar.ttf
Character 121 (0x79) not found in akbar.ttf
This all makes no sence to me because every other app I have can used
the font just fine. I may be able to fix the font, don't know. Let me
work on it and see what I can do. If I find anything out I'll post it
here.

Could this be the Double-Byte TTF problem? or was that fixed in 3.02?

Well, like I said, it was a problem with the font, although I still
don't know what it was. I opened the the old version of the font in
fontographer and then just regenerated the it and noe it works fine, at
least it does for me. I'm attaching a copy in zip format. don't know if
this will work becaus I have many problems with my connection. (I live
in the boonies and the phone lines here really suck!) Let me know if it
comes through OK, if not I'll try to resend it or find another way.

Well... i tried it... still did the same thing, BUT... it was a good idea, so..
what i did was opened it up in my cheap little shareware font maker/editor,
"Softy", (which is actualy not too bad...) and saved it into a new file... and,
well.... now it works.... Thanks for all your help.... Now we know at least
what to do about fonts not working.... Thanks again....
