You're probably using Outlook Express. I'm having the same issue over here.

Try http://news.povray.org/ and you'll probably see that the threads haven't
disappeared after all.

Nothing "disappeared". You just need to learn how to use your news reader
software (that is, read its user manual and/or help files). If you are
unable to to do that, use the web view at <http://news.povray.org>.

Apparently OE6, in fact, both of you. I use that too and they don't
disappear. It'll take some looking into your settings at the Tools menu,
then Options. Under the Maintenance tab uncheck both the "Delete..." boxes.
The first three checkboxes there can remain checked though. "Compact" after
so much wasted space is okay too.

Thanks to Hughes, B. I didn't realize that I was deleting read messages
older that 5 days.

His reply had the same message that the one from Thorsten but he was more
friendly. BTW, I have never seen replies less friendly that those from
Thorsten. It seems that he's looking here just to insult to all of us.

Thorsten, I'm going to filter all your messages (I know how to do it), so
I'll not see even your reply to this message. I don't need it. I don't need
your enormous intelligence that shadows to the mortal citizens.

Also, as well as you, English is not my mother tongue. I can speak four
different languages and English is the one that I like less. I use it just
as an Internet tool.

Groucho.

Maybe you ought to check facts before you toss words like "censure" around
next time. There was not a single unfriendly word in my reply. All I
stated was the simple fact that you did not bother to read your news reader
manual but instead started accusing the administrators of this server.

Your loss. But then again I don't need your personal insults as response to
a helpful message either.

BTW, remember that the purpose of these groups is not to fix your news
reader configuration.

I really appreciate your work, but in a way I can understand Groucho's
reaction. Still remains a fact that something like censure doesn't apply at
all here.

About OE6.... I'm one of those folks who hates to read manuals and I
actually accepted the fact that stuff disappears from my newsreader.

Cheers,
Eli

Granted, Thorstens replies in these newsgroups are not always the most
friendly-worded. However, in the specific reply you referred to, I don't
really see anything unfriendly or insulting.

The absence of being able to see face expressions and body language in
written messages means that they can often easily be interpreted more
negative than was intended. Therefore it's a good idea when reading a
written message to try to consciously interpret it as friendlily as you can.

Furthermore, if Thorstens reply was unfriendly at all, then surely your
reply to his post was far more unfriendly (and insulting too). How can you
defend that?

The key to making a community like this work is to accept other people's
ways of communicating despite small annoyances here and there.

The only time I ever saw a thread disappear was when I asked the group
whom they wanted to see get blown up in the next Rusty animation. I
offered the choice of Barney the Dinosaur (annoying children's show
character) or Bill Gates. Then someone suggested a sitting president,
which is the kind of conversation that gets servers impounded by
police. The thread vanished (and I decided to shoot up the MS logo
instead).

Regards,
John
