It's just a spherical camera with angle 360

Well yes that's what I want to do, but you can see that he says "I would
like to thank Tim Monroe of Apple's QuickTime team for making this
technology available to PC users. Until very recently, it has been
exclusively a Mac application"
because 5 years ago the VRMakePano was indeed available, which is why, I
suppose, it's mentionned in the QTVR file in the POV-Ray directory.

My bad, I saw it but thought it was the usual dead Apple link...
Thanks for the link, and thanks to Brian Todoroff for uploading the file in
p.b.u.

Some time later...

Well, it looks that this VRMakePano (dated 1998) can be opened but doesn't
do anything much useful after that : it cannot open and display image files,
let alone convert them. Clicking on the Make Pano Movie menu item does
nothing. No error message, nothing.

So I googled up VRMakePano and it turns out that Apple does have a more
recent VRMakePano file (dated 2000) available. It's just absent from the
list of their free VR utilities but can be found in the developer's section
here:
http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/Sample_Code/QuickTime/QuickTime_VR/vrm
akepano.htm

Now the situation is different: it opens (File Open) and displays my test
POV-Ray image panorama in bmp format but it's useless, as the Make Pano
Movie menu opens again the Open File dialog box. In one of the weirdest
interface behaviour ever (I can't believe this is really coming from
Apple...) I have to pick up the file in the first Open File dialog box,
cancel a *** second *** Open File dialog box and then I'm asked to save a
*.til file (???) and then finally a *.mov file. Victory ??? Not quite...
I've tested this on a NT machine and on a XP machine and while I can see
that the conversion is working (a window opens showing the panorama content,
flickers briefly and closes), the resulting file simply disappears (I did a
full search on the HD to be sure). Only on a W2000 box I was able to see the
QTVR file... This is just bizarre.

It is *developer* sample code! It is not meant for users at all, but for
developers to get a simple idea how a specific task is performed using
QuickTime. It is by no means an application that is useful for anything,
and in fact, many of the examples in the sample code section don't even come
with a prebuild executable included...

Was this stuff what they used to make Myst 3? :)
If I could use this, would I be able to make a walkthrough program that
displayed panorama images for my pov musemum? :)

Yes, it's looking good.
Since my attempts at creating real QTVR are getting nowhere I'll be using

when it works - and Spin Panorama). One strange thing is that the standalone
PT viewer puts POV-Ray in pause mode... I couldn't understand why my renders
paused anytime I loaded the viewer!
I still wish I could make QTVR instead but PTViewer will do the job. Thanks
for the help.

Gilles, all, it's an honor.

I know that this is an old thread, but I wanted to let you all know about
two freeware applications that are now available to make QTVR panoramas.

Our firm recently put out a QTVR presentation using PC's. Most of the
panoramas were done by rendering a scene out from POV-Ray using a sperical
camera, then using Photoshop to turn the image 180degrees, then using
freeware PanoCUBE to convert the image into a QTVR MOV file. One QTVR was
produced with VIZ4 by another coworker, then I had to extract it, edit and
re-write with PanoCUBE. I rendered the last one with SketchUp, touched it
up in Photoshop then converted with PanoCUBE.

If it's kosher, I'll post a link to the presentation online. In the
meantime, here are links to PanoCUBE (freeware, needs PanoTOOLS' PTStitcher
and pano12.dll to work) and GoCubic (freeware, based on VRMakePano).

PS - first time poster, please forgive me if I did not format links
correctly to be active
