He mustn't be too hard-core then... maybe he should try adding in some
Raytraced materials and then watching the render time drag out :)
Unless of course he somehow got a pre-release of Arnold (messiah:render)

Well, there is unit for measuring patience for rendering: blinn.

I know a Max user who thinks 57 minutes for a 800*600 image
is an incredibly long render.

If half of Max users paid, Autodesk would be richer that M$...
What's annoying with them (tough I really don't care for Autodesk),
is that they feel very proud about the software they use, and tend
to defend it agressively.
Right now, with the port of Mental Ray to Max, they are discovering
montecarlo radiosity and caustics, and cries if you remind them that
it's available elsewhere since long...

Would you know how long the Arnold images take to render ? I'm also wondering
why all the examples have a limited color range : is this on purpose or the
result of some limitation ? Anyway, they're probably the best I've seen so far
(in terms of lighting).

why to use max if you can use blender?
it is cross-platform in-house modelling/animation/rendering tool,
freeware and partially open source :)
and it should export to pov, too, with some python scripts.

i've read from some newsgroup that some kind of (limited?)
3ds-version is going to be free?

I'm not sure how long it takes to render but apparently it's fairly fast
(but I haven't seen it in action rendering). The color range is mostly due
to having a high color bleed level (thus the background color is making it
look bland) and the artist's choice in those samples. It can actually do
any kind of illumination model, such as surfaces that emit light etc, so
there isn't any limitation on it. Also, right now the renderer is still
being written for MAX, so support for refraction, reflection, and true
caustics will come soon (these features are already implemented into the
Lightwave plugin version of the renderer and they look very realistic).
The radiosity is its real selling point so far though, and its depth of
field and camera grain functions.
