Very quick query (I know this has come up on here before) -

I've got POV outputting TGA's with alpha info, so that I can make
buttons, icons, etc for my web page, but what file format should I use on
the web-page ?
According to PSP, alpha info isn't stored in GIFs or JPGs and PNGs don't
seem to be supported by many browsers yet (if any ?).
Are there any cheap(free) tools available that'll put alpha info into
GIFs or JPGs ?

Look at Ultimate Paint. The 2.46 version is shareware and 1.91 version is
freeware. I use the freeware version and generally us it for file
conversions and some simple editting. Out of the two the version 2.46 has
support for transparency with gifs.

Take a look

The JPEG format has no provision for an alpha channel. Neither does GIF, but in
GIF you can designate one color index as transparent. Most browsers should
support this, however it is not the same as an alpha channel - there is only
100% transparent or 100% opaque.
PSP should be able to manipulate GIF transparency.

What you're attempting is currently effectively impossible. Sorry.

Once Mozilla and/or IE5+ have widespread acceptance, you should be able
to transition to alpha-masked PNGs.. but keep an eye on those file sizes.

I use GIFs coz PNG doesn't seem to be supported. PSP lets you select
the colour for transparency.
For animations I use Gif Constructor, again it will let you select the
transparent colour and both will take Pov's TGAs for input. I usually
give GifCon's output to PSP's Animation Wizard to optimize it.

GIFs only support binary transparency though, not full alpha. I'm pretty
sure he wanted full alpha.

Yes, sorry I seem to have skipped over the alpha point. I remember
this subject - alpha channel - has appeared before but I don't
remember the conclusions. I have not used alpha so can't help there.
