I thought a CD was already available with images and tools and more...

See what I am proposing at that web page.............

Well, the current CD might:
1) have a sparse collection of the extremely very best determined by a
limited number of people, not several hundred ranked by the general
population and collected from a general call to the public;
2) have works <<1999.

Seriously, if a large handful of people think this idea will harm either
news.povray.org or the IRTC, I'll drop the idea. Vote on the web page
moreso/ in addition to complaining here.   I've already got a handful
saying they'd help and/or contribute.  If you think it's a bad idea, go to
the web page and vote against it. There's a poll at the end!

A note, you should tell people who submit to use high-qiality
compression; no-one wants a CD full of JPG artifacts... :-)
(and be prepared to wait for upload times, which isn't that bad probably
actually)

I see a major problem with this, the XOOM agreement states that everything
you post they can use (well basically that's what it's saying).  Some
artists might not want other companies to have unrestricted access to their
work.

I'm not sure totally about the agreement but I'm sure there are some
problems with it.  Thus, it would probably be better to have some space set
up somewhere else on a private server, but this costs money.  Unless of
course someone is willing to set up a server to host this (oh wait a second,
that means then there'd be MORE maintenance than there currently is...)

Any ideas?

Well, maybe someone could set up a temporary server with specific on/off
times and then it would be private and not public. Then that person could
pass the complete thing on to whomever were to make the CDs. BTW, this
person should have at least a cable modem connection to supply enough
bandwidth for everybody.

I guess the final stuff would have to be sent to Mr Cason anyway, I'm not
sure what kind of connection he has.

Considering the files would probably be JPEG and around 250 kb each it
shouldn't be too much of a problem with simultaneous traffic.

I'd would have been willing to do it but I'm sure I've already complained
enough about the lack of cable and high speed access in Australia already.

Xoom's TOS page says:

So yes, if there were a XOOM! magazine like the YAHOO! magazine, a small sample
of the submitted work could end up in a magazine article.  Xoom could also
possibly take a sample and briefly display in a TV ad for xoom.com.

I do not think we have to fear xoom selling a CD-ROM of our web page. Correct?

I would choose xoom because
1) it's free-- it's within my ability to do this for the pov team;
2) and the tos is not oppressive.
