I popped this tape into the VCR last week, and I was most impressed by
the fact that while much of this tape was considered state-of-the-art
CGI when it was first released, most of it could easily be done with
POV-Ray.
Heck, a lot of it could be greatly improved by the use of POV-Ray...

I've got Beyond the Mind's Eye tape too, brother gave it too me one year at
Christmas. Says it was put together in 1992 by MIRAMAR in Seattle, Washington.
Seems I remember seeing what looked like parts of the Lawnmower Man movie in
that. I also have a tape I recorded of computer graphics off of the local
Public Broadcasting Station, circa late 1980's and it's really fascinating to
watch because it's pretty much the beginnings of CG as we know it today.
BTME is kind of setup like a music video I guess, whereas this other is a
documentary.

I've got the Softimage Demo Reel for SIGGRAPH'97. I don't think I can do
anything of what they did in there. :/

I think I've seen that, and I have a copy of Gate to the Minds Eye, I
think it's called. It looked like it would be possible with enough time
and dedication to do it in POV-Ray, of course, I'd prefer to see the
community make something original instead of copying Mind's Eye stuff, but
I also see that imitating theMinds Eye would make a good learning
procedure.
(Not that there's much you need to learn, John. I wish I could know a
tenth of the stuff you do)

If you look closely at the video you can see places where curves are
approximated with an insufficient number of polygons. Often these are
curves that could be done with simple primitives in POV-Ray.

Sir, you flatter me. I only do the easy stuff.

John

I hate it when I see that. It doesn't let me enjoy what I'm seeing. It just
completely turns me off. I've seen it in very high quality stuff (not the
Softimage stuff, mind you). For example the box for Lightscape has an "ugly"
sphere in a beautiful environment.

If you consider Matrices to be easy in POV-Ray then I don't want to know
what you think is hard.

It's probably not that difficult for math-brainers, more an issue of whether
you paid attention in math class...

I find pretty much everything more than a silver sphere over a checkered
plane (black and white I must add :)) pretty difficult. I am kinda a
lost cause, I am completely unable to work any modellers but have
trouble visualising the text scenes. I really need to work at it.
