I suddenly have a problem with Povray. Everytime I turn off my computer, I
have to reinstall povray to get it to run. Has anyone had this problem? Is
this where I should discuss this (I don't think it's a bug) ?

First time I have heard this one Bill. Can you be a little more specific
about what is preventing you from running POV-Ray such as any warnings
or behaviors you are witnessing ?

Have changed anything, deleted anything, installed new software, drivers
etc.?

Well it just locks up and won't even let me use <ctrl+alt+del> to get out.

The specifics are these: Although I have re-installed everything since
my recent hard-drive death, Povray was working almost properly since then. I
had a problem with the help file returning a error so I un-installed Povray,
deleted the directory and any reference to povray in the registry then
downloaded another copy of povwin3.exe from povray.org and installed it. It
seemed to work fine except that the help file was -still- giving me an error
and not working properly( giving an error on every turn of the page and not
allowing me to use the content or search buttons).

I have not installed any other software, nor made any changes in the
setup since testing this install. I have done scandisk and defrag since
then, but I am pretty sure that this is all.

Suddenly, as of yesterday, if I turn off my computer and turn it back
on, I can't get povray to run. The wait cursor comes on and locks in place.
I have to power down to reboot. If I uninstall povray and reinstall it, I
can use it until I turn off my computer.

Oddly enough, I just noticed that my help file is now working.

Other than that I don't seem to have any problems with the computer. I
have Norton antivirus and have just done an update and scanned all files.

It seems odd to me, which is why I ask. As far as I can tell, there are
no clues as to why this is happening.

I would guess you had also done a reinstall of your OS if the hard drive was
redone? If not, like POV-Ray was on a secondary disk, maybe your registry
file has been rendered nearly useless (rendered, sorry, not trying to be
funny) and needs to be thrown out and a new one put in. Or perhaps
something less drastic is still possible, though I know not what.

Try the display drivers. That's what messed me up. I had to install older
versions.

Same drivers as the original install, right off the original CD. I'll
look into it a little though, Thanks.

BTW, the other suggestion of being installed on a different disk and
having a incorrect registry couldn't be since I am installing onthe same
disk, same directory name, but I wiped the registry anyway.

I don't mean to sound immodest, but at this point I don't think it is
anything very simple. I am pretty sure I checked all the basic stuff. If it
were anything obvious I probably would have already found and fixed it. At
this point I am considering a complete re-install of windows, but I don't
really think that will help since I just re-installed windows two weeks
ago...

    I suspect pixies...

Does DeWitt Jr. have access to the computer? It is a well-known fact that all
little children are computer geniuses :)
Seriously though, what about the newsreader testing? That was quite recently
IIRC. Did you uninstall Agent? Perhaps a connection there? Spontaneous bugs do
not exist, but the cause might be something seemingly minor...
Just an example: some time ago my Netscape browser suddenly stopped browsing.
Simply wouldn't connect to any server. But news & mail worked OK. To my
knowledge, I had done nothing to provoke such a weird phenomenon. A longish
period of IE ensued. Then, completely by accident, I discovered the cause. I had
been using GetRight (a download manager), but uninstalled it. Appears this
version of GetRight had a bug that, upon uninstalling, caused it to cripple NS.
The connection never occurred to me, tho...

He has had his own computer since he was three. Now at four he can
install and run his new educational software without help from Dad...

Unfortunately both the Agent, the NetScape and the reinstall of MSOE
were two or more days before this. I am almost completely sure that I
rebooted since then and I use Povray every day. But just to make sure I
uninstalled everything and then reinstalled Povray and I still have the
problem.

I'm racking my brain cause I don't want to have to reinstall Windows. I
am thinking about it though...
