Just do a search for win386.swp. If it exists it should not be to hard
to find. You can also check your windows control panel settings for the
swap file in the system section to see if it is specified. If unspecified
the swap file is usualy defaulted to the windows directory (or as I have
noticed it will always choose the partition with the least amount of space
- murphys law #666).

Try the file Win386.swp in the Windows (or equivalent) dir.

Nope. Just to be sure I tried uninstalling Povray, quitting and deleting
the swapfile, then reinstalling Povray. No help.
Odd, though. I expected that when I restarted windows I would get a
message that said it was rebuilding it's driver database, similar to what
happens when you install new hardware.

Not when deleting the swap file. There is no date stored there that is not
already backed up in the registry file. If you delete the registry you will
likely not be able to start windows and would have to reinstall everything
again. When you did your last Windows install was it a clean install with a
new registry or was it based on your older registry file ? Maybe you got
garbage in their messing with your head :0

Quit turning off your computer !
You are using the recommended shut down proceedures as opposed to simply
switching the machine off aren't you ?

Well I discovered the problem due to recurrent power outages (get it?
re-current?) but I have the problem no matter how I shut down.
