I've made a sketch of how the form for the POV-Ray User-Base could look
like. I would like to hear all you opinions and thoughts about it.
http://rsj.mobilixnet.dk/povrayuserbase/preview.htm
I don't know if I should combine the fields "yourself", "your family",
"job/education", and "hobbies" or if I should let them stay as separate
fields.
The same for "Your relation to POV-Ray", and "Your relation to the POV-Ray
society". Should I combine them?
I still haven't heard from anybody who can program cgi. Is there anybody who
can? Without some kind of automation I will have to see if I can manage to
run the User-Base manually, but that will limit the possibilities of a lot.
Greetings,
Rune S. Johansen

Rune,
It's a big questionnaire and many people don't much like filling them in. It would
perhaps be better if you marked the essential fields with an asterisk.
Some suggested modifications;
Use "Location" instead of "Destination" as a heading.
also
"Write the possible state you live in." would be better written as:- "Give State if
relevant"

"Sketch" eh? Ok, if you say so.
It's mighty fine. Wish I had some cgi experience besides attempting
to use the usual guestbook, form mail, etc. kind of stuff.
The detailed questionaire is lengthy but it helps to bring out the
various things which otherwise might not be said. Definately
automation is needed, the potential database you'd end up with
wouldn't be good to manipulate.
Check this place out for cgi scripts: http://www.scriptsearch.com/

I can make a cgi-script if it will be run in a UNIX platform (ie. with
/bin/sh and perl available). It's so much easier to parse the information
with perl and other unix tools that I'm not willing to do it with C/C++.

You ask for our position in degrees and minutes. Why not just automatically
uplink the data from each of our personal GPS implants??
#friendly_sarcasm_off
I think that Bob H computed it for us somehow......

I like it. I seems ok. It would be nice if it could be redesigned a bit,
with smaller, neater text and more attractive colors. I also suggest that
you develop a special interface for the info. when people look at it. I'm
also glad you chose the name I suggested. =)

It would

Done. But I must point out that people who don't like to fill in information
about themselves shouldn't register to the POV-Ray User-Base. The whole idea
is that they *should* fill in information. At least some amount.

Done.
Thanks for the suggestions!

That sounds really great!
I know close to nothing about this, but I guess that we now just have to
find a kind person with his own UNIX server who will provide a little space
and computer power for a cgi script. Is that right? Will anybody?

I've tried to follow them. Have a look at it. If it isn't what you thought
of you must provide me with some more details :-)
The url is still http://rsj.mobilixnet.dk/povrayuserbase/preview.htm
BTW, I found out it didn't work with Netscape before. It should work now.

Don't know if it's a problem at this end or not. No web page shows up in
Netscape or Internet Explorer as of this posting time.
