I personally find it odd that the admin of the official news server
dedicated to a free raytracing program is posting a message about
using said server to play a commercial scan-line rendered
polygon-based game. Just a thought...

  Hi, Peter. Perhaps Chris just thinks that it would be a fun and pleasant
diversion. It shouldn't detract in any way from anything else that goes on
here.

Exactly... they're faster (once they have been programmed with a set).  For
example, they don't have a peak performance rate once they've been
programmed... because their peak is the sustained rate.

And also their ability to parallel process is a major step... Von Neumann
would be impressed.  :)

You know you've been raytracing too long if you refuse to play any
game that uses non-raytraced graphics :)

Hey, I'm not accusing our lovely admin of anything! Just been thinkin'
aloud... As long as we can share ideas over here I won't complain
about what this server is being used for -- it's not my server after
all. Please excuse me for any offense due to my previous post, I
assure you it was purely implicit (I hope my English does not betray
me right now :) )

I still occasionally play Doom II, and to me it's more fun than Quake. At least
in single player mode.

IMO they haven't gotten that much better since. Just a lot more eye candy.
While I'm not from the pong generation, some of the oldies from XT and 286 are
still my all time favourites. Pong ain't bad, either. It's damn addictive, esp.
in multiplayer mode :)

The framerate sucks, though. We need more power...
And you can create your own worlds (levels) in Quake et al.
Can be quite fun sometimes.

...Which won't be good enough any more after 6 months or less. I love progress,

same functionality using real-time raytracing ... ?

  I understand it will be a major topic of discussion again the year at
Siggraph. There is some mention of it  by Eric Haines in his most recent
news letter.
