I'm thinking of turning over a spare drive to Linux to run Pov on (I presume
this is already a "you know you've been poving too long when....").

Can anyone confirm that unix pov is faster than win pov on the same
hardware? (Pentium 100).

Not with stats, but yes.

It's faster, but even more important, you have more RAM over for pov in linux
than in a "trimmed" windows .

POV-Ray 3.1 for Linux should run faster on a P-100 than the Windows
version, but it actually runs slower on my dual-booting PII-333.  The
POV-Ray binary for Windows is compiled with Pentium II optimizations
that help on a Pentium II but may actually run slower on a Pentium, as I
understand it.  I can't confirm this, since I don't have VC++, and the
only Pentium machine I have is a dedicated Linux box.  I also have no
idea how well or poorly the binaries run on non-Intel CPU's.

I'm looking into different compilers in hopes of regaining the across
the board performance advantage of Linux.  I don't expect anyone would
complain of POV-Ray got faster. ;-)  If we end up distributing binaries
that don't work well on some CPU's, Linux (and other Unix) users can
recompile it for their CPU's more readily than most users.

3.1e on my AMD-K6-maschine. Linux was always faster than Windows until I set the
render priority to highest in the Windows version. But than you can do nothing


An other scene made by me was rendered on Linux in about 5 minutes and the
Windows version took about 6 minutes. (800 x 600, A0.3)

I must say, that I have not recompiled the Linux version. I took the binaries as
they were.

According to my partner, I don't do anything on my computer apart from POV
anyway ;)

It looks like I won't gain much from Linux. However, I'll still go for it,
and, if my computer ever talks to me again, I'll try posting some
comparative render times.

nearly long enough).

Hmm, just have to ask, what happened if you reniced POV in linux to take 
full(or
close to) priority ? Have you tested this ?

You need The Gimp, Enlightenment, Gnome, LinNeighborhood, emacs, the updated
POV mode for emacs...
and ZOOOM!

(I finally made the transition at home just a couple of months ago, but it
has breathed new life into my ol' 133)

Not yet. I tried but had a problem to run PovRay as root. But I think if you set

Yes, but what i meant was that in WIN, you can't work while pov is runnin
g on
full priority, and to compare that to linux using a normal mode (nice=0
, i
think) it's not that great, is it? at lest not in obectivity...

but then, when I left my puter for the weekend i had it running at nice -
15....
*hehe*

as for running pov as root, you don't need to, only use top to renice it 
once
running. (sure, you need to be root to renice to negative values..)
