Is there any way to simulate the earths atmosphere in order to produce
realistic sunsets and how is the sun itself done?

for example: if the sun is near the horizon the sky turns red if it is
up higher
                           the sky is blue.

I'm no expert in this department but I can direct you to a great
tutorial on the subject:

Yes, you can do this. Go to povray.binaries.images and check out my message
titled "Media cloudscape revisited" (10/5/98). The original image was by Mike
Andrews. His message was "A media cloudscape ..." (9/28/98), and his code can
be found in povray.text.scene-files in the message "Media clouds." (9/29/98). I
posted two sunset images that both look pretty good.

A word of caution: These scenes take a long time to generate.

If you want my modified version of Mike's scene, let me know (I hope he doesn't
care).

Since I've seen this scene, I did found it really beautiful.

But, is it possible to generate such clouds over a normal landscape, with
HF? I think I did try to do it but nothing happened with the landscape, I
could only see the clouds. The rest was completely dark. In fact, I didn't
spend a lot of time with that, I supposed it was to strong for me.

No, I don't care :-)

I hope some more people get interested in using media for atmospheric effects,
especially they find a faster way to do it!

    Bye,
        Mike Andrews.

Have a look at strange media in the images newsgroup it was based on Mike
Andrews work. Then it went off in wierd directions of it's own when I
discovered the effect of ramp_wave and frequency... That took 5 hours to
render on a 300 mhz P2

Look out for my next IRTC entry it pushes media into even stranger realms.
