Another POV-Snob here...

1:
Modelling is for unintelligent people. The whole trick with
POV is to visualise (ok, vizualize if you like) a complete
composition behind your eyes, not just fool around with
previews, dragging objects around.

2:
The pronunciation pee-oh-vee for POV is only acceptible for
people who silently think "Persistence of Vision" whenever
they use the abbreviation POV. All of those who think the
spelling is "Persestance of Vizion" (take a look at some
websites and find out how creative some people can be with
the spelling of those three words) should speak of POV
(pronunciation: pov). Personally, I prefer to say pov with a
long "O", which means more to me than just 'persistence of
vision'.

3:
A new verb should enter the dictionary: to pov. Meaning: 1)
to write a scene 2) to render a scene

4:
To use image maps for textures is cheating. It's like
boasting about a great fire you built when you secretly
soaked the wood with spirits before you lit it. Procedural
textures are the only true textures.

5:
Halos were too simple to do complicated things.
Media are too complicated to do simple things.

6:
Making animations with POV is for people who have too much
time on their hands and can't figure out how to set their
camera's and lightsources to get the perfect view of the
scene.

7:
A scene is only finished when in case the code gets lost.

:)

1. Meshes are for wimps.
Always use mathematically defined surfaces and CSG. In an emergency,
use blobs.

2. Entering numbers such as 3.14159 or 1.4142 is evil.
Use a mathematical function so you get the full precision of your
numerical processor.

3. Never #declare an object and use it multiple times.
Use a #macro to create each object so they can all be slightly
different.

P.S. I'm guilty of all of the above, PoD.

If needed, output scene to .inc file to reduce parsing time...
Or write external program for it...

Hold on now, rhymes with "of"??
That would make it like-- puv... for me anyhow. (rhymes with dove, a
cooing bird similar to pigeons)
Get me out of here, this is the pov snobs thread not the "how many ways
can you pronounce a 3 letter word"! Hhheeeeeeellllllp.

oh, forgot..
Never do anything with a texture that can be done with a nacro that declares a huge
number
of small objects.... or was it the other way around ??? *gah*

For me, I pronounced "pov" not like "puv" (which does indeed rhyme with
dove... ;) but more like.. oh I don't know.. erm.. like the "hov" part of
"hovercraft".. with the emphasis on the "o".

Hehe.. I agree, this thread is getting a bit pointless - my fault ;)

I am NOT a snob, I'm a POV dilettante! I only use it to generate
logos and web graphics!

(Ducking and scuttling to avoid the hail of thrown
mathematically-defined, procedurally-textured objects!]

  #declare FireBall =
sphere{<0,0,0>, 2000000
  texture{Fire_Ball_Texture scale 2000000}
  translate<in George's direction>
}

object{FireBall}
