I have the first POV-Ray CD (with version 2.2) and was wondering what
news there is on the second (if any). Mine is a bit oudated as almost
everything on it isn't the latest version. If anyone in charge of the
compilation is reading this, my wish-list on the CD would be:
o POV-Ray v3.1
o Moray v3.01
o Laurens Lapre's LSystem applications, v4
o The latest version of Dave's Targa Animator
o Chris Colefax's fantastic include files
o TextureView v3.3
o WinZip and/or PkZip version whatever
Anyone else got any thoughts on it?
And, by the way, where is Dave's Targa Animator available from?

Bad idea.....
Several of the above are not free, and most of the others
will be obsolete well before the inventory on a typical
CD print will be exhausted. For example, Moray and Colfax's
files, both of which are in the process of upgrades
to 3.1 syntax.
At least as useful would be a list of links to the above
web sites.... but then they are all well available on the
Web already ( such as http://twysted.net/ ).
Images and animations are durable.

The Berkeley MPEG Tools. They include a encoder and a player. Why not
the ImageMagick package, too, part of which can be used to convert image
files by command lines simple as "convert image.tga image.jpeg", which
gives a very handy thing for frame-by-frame processing (I guess it can even
insert a signature in an image completely automatically, without bothering
doing it directly in POV). And while we're at it, add a POV-mode for Emacs
(at least one of those does exist).

The reason I wrote this was that despite constant revisions and updates,
the POVRay package stands up well by itself currently (especially v3.1).
So it would be really handy to have it on some kind of permanent media,
and floppy disks can be unreliable.

It will be on the IRTC Year Two CD-ROM, currently awaiting release. You can

Two points:
1. Since this is povray.general and not povray.windows, I think the
statement that 3.1 is included is a misrepresentation, as it is
available only on a subset (approx 50%) of supported platforms.
2. My comments were directed towards the inclusion of such things as
Moray, Colfax includes, etc, which are currently more volatile than
the POV code.

It is not a misrepresentation. 3.1 is included for all platforms currently
available. Phrased another way, a platform isn't supported on 3.1 until such
time as we release it. I find your suggestion that I 'misrepresented' this to
be offensive.

I wasn't talking to you. I was talking to sta### [at] ozemailcomau, who
specifically asked about inclusion of POV-Ray on a CD.

No offense was intended, but I should have been more sensitive to the fact
that this is a sensitive subject, on which a lot of unjustified criticism
has been tossed about.

His original email asked about a broad range of materials.... I think we
agree that POV belongs but the other material is best left on the net.
