Although it would hurt me a great way if you should shut down this news
server I understand your attitude. I hope these people come to their
minds. Their behaviour is irresponsible!
I hope this site will continue to exist.
Good Luck
Marc

yes, but the password would have to be public, so they'd get in anyhow.

What if you were to do some kind of registration with individual
uid/pass?

But that's even more work. It's just not on.

I asked a knowledgeable person about this and got this reply ...
(comments follow)
<quote>
I presume that he is running it open for the povray users... If so, no he
can't stop it. He can add authentication to it though, thats trivial, and
would fix the problem. Of course, then he has to manage a password list
and whatnot....
I would suggest that he try a web based program like one of the ones we
have played with around here, and do the support that way. Easy to do, and
easy to setup, and people like using web browsers
</quote>
As already mentioned the authentification imposes overhead that is not
acceptable, but if the password keeping functions were automated or if
volunteers offered to help admin the pass file???
Seems like the web based groups (which are already done) is going to
be the only answer. I hope that if the news server per se is shut down
that the web functions will still be availble?
Unless - we can get specific info on who is messing around and then
apply appropriate pressure ... if you do get reliable id data then please
let
me know - there are people who could apply that pressure - if we know
exactly who is doing this.

We'd still have the same problem. The person responsible for this abuse would
simply get a password and start feeding the articles again. We don't know who
it is.

Nope. If it's gone it's gone. The web functions aren't up to what we want
(there's no way to post with attachments for example, which is very important
for this server).

The best thing to do is attempt to work out who's in charge out there at the
university of agriculture and write to them. Writing to the server ops probably
won't help because if I understand things correctly, they have become known for
doing this sort of thing. I doubt they'd be responsive (especially given the
fact that I've already written once to the given contact address and have had
no reply).
IMO applying pressure on the university is probably the only way to stop this.

what about somehow using FTP? I'm not much for technical details... but it
seems that if you added a button to the HTML form to prompt for a file upload,
there should be some way to have a link, say at the end of the message, refer
to a file on an ftp server...?
just a thought ...

I know I already suggested it, but I got no answer. How about a
mail-to-news gateway ? You can post attachments in your mail, and they are
kept as attachments on your news server (which continues to exist, so no
new thing to install). The web interface is then used to read the
articles, with their attachments.
Well... My two yen.

While alternatives are possible (maybe, maybe not) I think we shouldn't
write the group off yet. I say let's nail these guy's darn it !
Your two yen plus 2 from me.
