Hi all,

Here's a variant of my recent impossible image "Oh Gear Lord". The basic idea is
the same, but this one has two more features that required a few additional
tricks: magic lightning and an engraved text.

I hope you like it. I am interested in hearing which you prefer. This fancier
image, or the more simple gear?

Without a doubt I prefer this one.
The gear would be improved by giving it more detail (smaller and more 
teeth, a worm gear. If that were possible.).
The engraved script makes it very believable to my eye.
I would not mind a larger one for wallpaper.

In fact, that ring COULD be made for real. It's similar to a thickned 
moebius stripe.

Hi Stephen,

I also prefer this one because of the extra detail. Nevertheless, I don't
actually plan to change my gear image. For one, currently both images are still
fairly distinct, which I like. Furthermore, it's not easy to improve the teeth
without putting too much focus on the fact that they do "jump" from one side to
another. The distance between the teeth prevents it from becoming too
noticeable.

I might render a larger one for use as a wallpaper. If so, what size would you
require?

More precisely, a ring like the one shown here, which looks to have four
different sides but actually has only two (or even one), can be made for real.
It would, however, look different from the Mage Ring. The Moebius ring could
easily lie flat on a table, whereas that is not so easy for the Mage Ring.
Forcing this would probably require a big hammer wielded, for example, by Gr'hul
the Ghul.

Hi Erwin,
You are right in every respect. It was but an idle thought.

But thinking on it. The two images are, to me, high up on either side of 
the uncanny valley. To combine them would drop them to the depths.

Thank you but I don't know how good it would look on a laptop. Aspect 
ratio is 16:9. The composition might be difficult. But that is, as they 
say, a challenge. ;-)

That wouldn't be good. So better leave them both as is. ;-)

Attached an updated version which you could use as a wallpaper. You may notice
that I took the easy way out with respect to the composition. That, however, was
not just laziness. I actually thinks the large background helps to make the ring
"pop out". Furthermore, this way it will not be immediately covered when you
have a few icons on your desktop.

As an alternative, you could rotate it 90 degrees.
