Oh, I believe that.

I have a hunch: You probably found the value of 6.5 cm somewhere labeled
as the "lateral offset [between the eyes]", which you misinterpreted as
the "lateral offset [between each eye and the midline]", and hence
thought you'd have to multiply it by 2 to get the inter-pupillary distance.

Or maybe someone else did that stunt -- maybe someone not familiar with
the metric system --, published the results, and you picked up that
value without checking.

I probably wouldn't have noticed either, were it not for the fact that I
happen to have measured my own IPD when I set up my Oculus Rift DK2.

Actually, no -- 1 palm is about 7.5 cm, 7.7 cm, 7.4 cm, or exactly 7.62
cm, depending on whether you're an ancient Egyptian, Greek or Roman, or
a semi-modern Englishman. (Or anywhere from 18.2 to 29.3 cm if you're a
17th century continental European.)

The IPD is typically about half a digit short of a palm.

I should have said: a Thomas palm :-)

Not convinced.

If by "that distance" you meant the IPD, then I would have to conclude
that your palms must be exceptionally slender, even a lot more so than mine.

If by "that distance" you meant those 13 cm, then I would have to
conclude that you either must have "hands like toilet seats" as we say
in German, or that you meant "hand" rather than "palm" (with yours being
reasonably wider than usual).

Well, making a facepalm (minus thumb) both edges correspond exactly to
my pupils.

So with your palm in front of your face you can still see everything in
the distance, with no "blind" strip whatsoever?

That's rather unusual.

No, there is of course a blind half for each eye. Palm width=80mm.

The question is, do the "blind halves" appear to overlap?

If they do overlap even when you look at something in the distance, your
IPD is less than 80mm.

Well, I suppose they do.
