I have a hunch: You probably found the value of 6.5 cm somewhere labeled
as the "lateral offset [between the eyes]", which you misinterpreted as
the "lateral offset [between each eye and the midline]", and hence
thought you'd have to multiply it by 2 to get the inter-pupillary distance.

Or maybe someone else did that stunt -- maybe someone not familiar with
the metric system --, published the results, and you picked up that
value without checking.

I probably wouldn't have noticed either, were it not for the fact that I
happen to have measured my own IPD when I set up my Oculus Rift DK2.
