Actually, no -- 1 palm is about 7.5 cm, 7.7 cm, 7.4 cm, or exactly 7.62
cm, depending on whether you're an ancient Egyptian, Greek or Roman, or
a semi-modern Englishman. (Or anywhere from 18.2 to 29.3 cm if you're a
17th century continental European.)

The IPD is typically about half a digit short of a palm.
