Hi everyone,

One of the first things I made with POV-Ray version 1.0 back in the early '90s
was the Metallica logo. It was really messy (I didn't know about coincident
surfaces yet...) so recently I decided to redo it and clean it up. I ended up
with a new scene and here it is. The concept is related to the song "For Whom
the Bell Tolls," which is about a five-man special forces team.

Please feel free to criticize anything that might be wrong with this scene...

Known problems: The scene is kind of "busy." I'm not sure what can be done about
that. The scale of the cloth weave on the flag is way too large, but I'll adjust
it for the final (large) render. I've always assumed the song was about the
Vietnam war, so the camo doesn't match the type that probably would have been in
use under those circumstances ("Tiger stripe,") but since there's no specific
reference to which war the song is about I fudged for artistic preference.

Notes: The background is very dark. There are three shades of brown in the camo
- tan, medium, and dark brown. On LCD monitors without good contrast the dark
brown actually looks like medium brown. It should be about the color of dark
chocolate. The camo texture is supposed to be ballistic nylon. The extra face is
Cliff Burton ("Men of five, still alive...")

Dave Blandston

That's the best use of brick pattern I ever saw!

Excellent work. The weave could indeed be a tiny bit finer, but not much. I
suggest you adapt it in accordance with the image size.

Cool. Is this using woven cloth normals for the flag? ;)
You might try adding a small amount of turbulence as there
seem to be some regular sampling artefacts.

The song is about the Spanish civil war, see [1]. I actually read the book by
Hemingway ages ago just because it happened to have the same title as the
Metallica song that I really liked. Then I got to the chapter on which Metallica
based their lyrics, and I realized it wasn't just coincidence :-)

I ended up just using the texture instead of the normal because there's no light
source, just radiosity and the texture seemed to work out better due to that
fact. I'll try adding some turbulence, which there should be some of anyway. I
guess I overlooked that detail... Thanks for the suggestion.

That's very interesting to know. I've enjoyed that song for many years and never
knew that.

Thanks! Since the original posting I've adjusted the camo texture. It looked
fine at screen-size resolution, but the final version of this scene will be much
larger. I wasn't satisfied with just using the brick pattern because real fabric
would have a gradual change in color, and the brick pattern only allows for a
sudden change between the brick and morter colors. Therefore, I'm now using a
home-made brick pattern with gradient edges for a more realistic look. The
home-made pattern also has the advantage of being able to offset the rows of
bricks by any amount. Here's what I'm using now...

#local Transparent = color Black transmit 1;
#local SemiTransparent = color Black transmit .4;

#local BallisticNylonScale = .28; //Overall scale

#local BallisticNylon = pigment {
   #local ThreadWidth = .26;
   #local EdgeWidth = .14;
   #local HorizontalScale = .85; //Controls the width of the "bricks"
   #local RowOffset = .5;
   gradient x
   color_map {
      [0 color SemiTransparent]
      [EdgeWidth / HorizontalScale color Transparent]
      [1 - EdgeWidth / HorizontalScale color Transparent]
      [1 color SemiTransparent]
   } //color_map
   scale <HorizontalScale, 1, 1>
} //pigment

#local BallisticNylon = pigment {
   gradient y
   pigment_map {
      [0 color Transparent]
      [.5 - ThreadWidth / 2 - EdgeWidth color Transparent]
      [.5 - ThreadWidth / 2 - EdgeWidth color SemiTransparent]
      [.5 - ThreadWidth / 2 BallisticNylon]
      [.5 + ThreadWidth / 2 BallisticNylon]
      [.5 + ThreadWidth / 2 + EdgeWidth color SemiTransparent]
      [.5 + ThreadWidth / 2 + EdgeWidth color Transparent]
      [1 color Transparent]
   } //color_map
} //pigment

#local BallisticNylon1 = texture {
   pigment {BallisticNylon}
   scale <BallisticNylonScale, BallisticNylonScale, 1>
} //texture

#local BallisticNylon2 = texture {
   pigment {BallisticNylon translate <RowOffset * HorizontalScale, .5, 0>}
   scale <BallisticNylonScale, BallisticNylonScale, 1>
} //texture

#local NewTexture = texture {OldTexture} texture {BallisticNylon1} texture
{BallisticNylon2}
