Time for a little wip.

I let myself be inspired by the photograph by Bill's daughter and the 
engraving by MC Escher.

Height_field entirely based on a GIMP image; Red Oak leaves scanned from 
RL in the neighbourhood.

The challenge for me is now to get the positioning of the leaves better 
in relation to the height_field and - where overlapping - with each 
other. Not sure yet how I am going to solve that...

Hi Thomas,

what Kind of object are the leaves? The sand is an height_field I understood,
are the leaves meshes or height_fields too? A possible way may be to convert the
height_fields into meshes. Most likely you must modify the macros be Rune
(shapes.inc) to meet your needs. IIRC the meshes can be converted to OBJ with
PoseRay. Then the dressing room in Poser may help. Just a silly idea, never done
this before. But I would give it a try. I know you have all this resources.

The leaves are meshes (Silo uvmapped>>obj>>Poseray>>mesh2). The problem 
is not there. It is in the fact that ideally I need several trace() 
points per leave and choose the highest for its position, then - if 
necessary - reposition the leaf according to the other points. 
Especially where tracks are present, height differences are substantial 
within a small circle.

Looks good so far, if you are trying to be more like the Escher image I think a
brighter sky and less ripples on the water are required the ground/sand looks
really great though.

I agree that the leaves are probably the weakest part of the image currently
especially where they overlap the ground.

Thanks Sean. No, I do not want an 'Escher' ;-) I just draw my 
inspiration from different sectors. However, the sky could certainly be 
brighter and is on my todo list. Concerning the ripples, I looked at the 
photograph and thought that 'shivering' aspect of the water really neat. 
I will need to scale down the effect still more however.

The leaves are a challenge and not trivial. I am working on a solution 
using two trace points per leaf (for a start) and see how it goes. I 
need also to concern myself with the collision aspect. I shall dig 
through my collection of third party code as I remember a couple of 
examples from the past.

Better but still not perfect. The control of the leaf orientation is 
tricky especially were there are sudden jumps in the height_field. For 
trace() I use a more basic/smooth height_field and calculate the 
orientation from two points but still the transformations are not equal 
for all leaves.
