Has anyone ever wondered why Clu's tank is missing a part in the scene from
5:25 to 5:30 on the TRON DVD? Ok... maybe not but I think this picture will
show you why its missing. The main picture and the top left insert are 100%
POV-Ray. The top right insert is a screen grab from the DVD. Anyways...
what do you think of the tank? I'll be posting more pictures of it here:
http://makeashorterlink.com/?B44251F96
By the way... is there an easy way to get everything out-lined in red as on
the movie tank. I could take all my cones and cap them with very small
torus and outline my boxes and prisms with cylinders and spheres at the
corners and set them with the Red pigment and a high ambient value but
that's alot of work and shapes formed by differences or intersections are a
bit harder to outline. I notice where surfaces join the surface gradient is
discontinuous. Is there a way I could play off that?
Just curious...

Are you planning to do a Tron 2 ?
For your outlining problem, I think you should turn toward cartoon
rendering technics (I can't find an entry to point you to though, but
there is one in the news for sure).

Well I am currently unemployed. If the people doing Tron 2 are looking to
hire anyone I'm certainly game. ;) But my main intent was just to learn
POV-Ray and have a little fun and I couldn't think of a better subject
matter to start with.
And thanks for the tip on the cartoon rendering techniques. Is there a tool
out there that will allow me to search the newsgroups for that subject
matter? I'm quite new here so maybe I'm over looking something obvious.
Thanks,
Carl

I always find it easiest to search the newsgroups using the web view at
http://news.povray.org/. Just searching for 'cartoon' returns a bunch of
posts.
Cheers

I suggest a red transparent plastic with a darker center..

Ok... I've looked at some of the cartoon rendering technics and it looks
like they are aimed at how to highlight the edges of the subject. That's
not quite what I'm after. Its more like I want the wire frame of my tank
turret to be highlighted. However my turret is a CSG built up from POV-Ray
primitives. I'm still thinking about this one.
Thanks,
Carl

Well, POV primitives (with the exception of things like mesh,
height_field, and bicubic_patch) don't have anything resembling
wireframe data, and raytracing isn't too good at drawing lines...they
would have to be post-processed in. It looks to me like this is what was
done with Tron...raytracing for the main scene objects, composited with
a simplified, edited wireframe.

I think it turned out rather nice. This is one pass 100% povray. Its two
CSGs. One black and one red. I owe Bernard Hatt a thank you as it was he
that showed me how to highlight some of the more complex joins.
Regards,
Carl

Very nice indeed. Congratulations.
