Here are screenshots of the POV editor's font selection dialog box,
and of the registry keys that are associated with font selection.
These were taken after my system was restored to "normal" condition,
and before any font was selected by me.

You will notice that the registry claims that I am currently using a
font that doesn't even appear in the font selection dialog box at all:
"Lucinda Console"

Is this behaviour "normal"? Why can't I see "Lucinda Console" in my
font selection menu? How would I ever be able return to this default
font, after choosing temporarily choosing another font, if I can't see
it in the selection menu?

I just checked my system and I can't find the "Lucinda Console" font
anywhere on my system. I looked in my windows "Font" directory, and
also inside the directories of the POV-Ray 3.5 installation. It's
nowhere to be found.

Is this a problem? Why does the editor, by default, specify a font
that doesn't exist on my system?

Also, I have previously listed this info, but here it is again:

POV-Ray for Windows v3.5, Beta 2
Pentium 133
Windows 95, OSR2
256 Megs SDRAM

Thanks,
Glen

Lucida Console is the default font used by the editor until you
select another one. If that font can't be found (and it's not
installed on Windows 95 by default, which is why you don't have
it) then another font is used automatically (I think it's courier
new).

I'll trust your judgement on this, but do you think it would be better
for the editor to use a suitable default font that is found on ALL
windows systems? ((I'm assuming that such a font even exists.) I also
realize that it might not be within your ability to easily change the
default font, but I thought I would at least mention the idea.

By itself, the default font behaviour isn't a problem for me, as long
as it isn't contributing in some indirect way to the other font
problems I've mentioned earlier.

I want to express my appreciation for your reading and replying to my
posts so promptly. I like POV 3.5 quite a bit. The POV-Team is doing a
very good job.

Thank you,
Glen

The Lucinda font was the default in v3.1 and the tradition continues with
v3.5. You are the first I have heard of that questions its use so I don't
think it is a wide spread problem. Although I haven't checked, it is quite
likely available as a single download from the MS website for those who
want it.

It does. If Lucida Console isn't there it defaults, as I stated, to
Courier New (which is standard). So what's wrong with that behaviour ?

Well if it does, it certainly isn't Lucinda Console. That font isn't
installed on Win95 systems.

There is nothing tragically wrong at all, unless this is somehow
indirectly related to the editor's tendency to lose track of my list
of fonts in the font selection dialog box.

I just thought it was perhaps a reasonably good idea to choose a font
that existed on all Windows systems to begin with. If the system
reverts back to Courier New, why not simply use Courier New to begin
with? (Assuming that it is available on all Windows versions.)

The reason I suggest this is to provide more uniformity between the
various Windows installations of POV-Ray. For one thing, the less
variations in behaviour, the less oppurtunity for unexpected bugs or
other problems to creep in. Another reason is to simply give POV a
more uniform and "trademark" look across various Windows platforms,
although that is merely a cosmetic and psychological concern, and
certainly not an operational concern.

Later,
Glen
