Hi,

I'm trying to make an animation, but I can't get it smaller than 2Mb.
Which software do you use?
My lowest Mpeg quality is millions of colors, which is a bit much (2Mb).
An avi with 256 colors gives a file of 18Mb.
I like to post it on povray.binaries.animations but it's quite a bit to
big in this way.
Does anyone has any cuggestions for software? (Linux please).(A GUI wiil
be apreciated, since I have to do complex timings).

Remco

I'm not a Linux guy so I can't offer any software suggestions, but if you
want to make the mpeg smaller there are a few routes. First, try to find an
mpeg encoder that allows you to specify the bitrate; smaller bitrates =
smaller files. Some animations respond better to lowered bitrate than
others. Also, you might try scaling the frame size down. Lastly, cut
frames; sometimes you might find you even like it better going twice as fast
;). All of these things will help to chop your mpeg down to size, but they
will also reduce the quality of it, so use caution.

One more thing, many many times you just can't get a small enough file, so
if you really can't bare to cut up your mpeg any more, try to find a
reasonable web server to upload it to and leave the address in p.b.a...
people do it all the time.

Sorry I can't help you with the software, but I'm sure someone here can.

Hi Remco,

I'm only a newbie to animation, so maybe there are others with different
solutions.
What were your initial pov image file sizes? I have found that this
does have a bearing on the final avi or mpeg size.
Maybe if you reduced your pov images to around 360 x 240, created your
animation file from these images, it might be an appropriate size for
posting.

Cheers Alex

well, it's a pitty, but they were already 320x240 (see my animation on
www.beryllium.nu/~remco)

Thanks for the advice in anyway.

I took a look around for a Linux Mpeg encoder (with GUI front-end) and found
nothing. But hey, if you want to make MP3 audio files that's another matter
:-)

A mp3 included with an animation would be fun, but at the moment I only
want to created an animation.

I know no nothing about Linux - yet :-) - and next to nothing about mpeg,
but, freely translated from a message from Serge Larocque
sgl### [at] hotmailcom on the french newsgroup nzn.fr.3D.pov on
news.newz.net (212.198.91.25):
--------
If you are running Linux, I'd advise using mpeg3encode rather than
mpeg_encode, as I do not find this last one to be satisfying. You can find
these utilities on the web: www.mpeg.org, www.mpeg1.de, and www.mpeg2.de
(you can also use www.mpeg.de, but this one is in German). mpeg2encode can
build mpeg1, mpeg2 PAL, NTSC but I could not get any good mpeg2 outputs, so
I only use mpeg1. I believe that mpeg2 is only usable with hardware
decompression, using a card.
----------

I hope this can help you.

Povingly

Philippe

I don't know if it will help but increasing the anti-aliasing
depth will reduce the resulting mpeg size.
