I figured it out. It was the new 24-bit format that DTA was producing. I got
Daves player and all is fine.

As far as the quality thing goes, I think it just a matter of fiddling the
settings. The looping thing is definitely the player, as you said, a DOS
player is much better.

First off - not looping round to the start of an AVI is either going
to be a problem with the animation (not using the Cyclic option, or
not returning objects to their original locations - nearly - by the
end of the animation etc. etc.) or it's going to be a RAM problem.
windows loves RAM, pretty much the mre the merrier (although IIRC
there are problems at the 1 or 2 GB boundaries... but that isn't an
issue for most of us).

Windows's media player can be set t loop video files (BTW do you have
Media Player2 ? Free update from MS). Try opening a video file
(perhaps use right-click in Explorer and select "Open" rather than
"play" or double-clicking). Once it's loaded select "Options" from the
"View" menu. You should be able to set continuous looping (or replay)
from there.

Just to make things simple, Media Player was superceeded by
ActiveMovie, which has now been superceeded by Media Player 2.
Obvious, relaly...

Sorry - can't help with anything else.

Thanks for the suggestions Cliff. I found that it was the player, it is
basically harder to play AVIs than FLIs as FLIs are (or can be) specifically
built to loop quickly. That is the file structure, not the animation itself.
My animations were looping perfectly as FLIs, but when I created AVIs, there
was a stutter at the loop point. The frames were still OK, it was just the
replay rate sags a shade when it rewinds. (I am something of a perfectionist
on this sort of stuff and love creating loops where you can't see the join
and trying to make them look longer than they really are!)

Thanks
Gordon

This problem has annoyed me too recently. I have taken to designing looping animations
that accelerate/decelerate so that they pause as the player loops. This looks
perfectly
natural, although not applicable in all cases.

If that isn't a telling comment (or a sad indictment) of Windows and
it's various "features" then I don't know what is!
