I'd be interested when you find your method of doing this as well.  I'm finding
the scaling method breaks down under some transformations on the object, so it
isn't always perfect.  I tried creating text that explodes from a single point
to the full text (like a cone along the Z axis) and got lots of jaggy edges when
using the scaling method.
