A small update to this, I tried building 3.5 from source but it relies on an
obsolete version of libpng that's API incompatible, so unfortunately I won't be
making that comparison. However, if anyone is curious enough and wants to do it
themselves then feel free, I'd be happy to link to it from my article if you let
me know.
