Its fakery, in that its not real subsurface scattering.  My experiments with
media in this area have so far been dismal failures.

Basically each candle is double_illuminated, then a small flat area light or
point light is put just inside the cylinder, right at the top.  The light's
fade_distance is set to correspond to the candle's radius.  It looks best for
tall thin type candles, where the dark area on the bottom is quite visible.
