As usual, the best I can do is to rip off someone else's wonderful work.
Here's the video I tried to copy in Wings3D, but it's not too easy.  There
doesn't seem to be any way to make a smooth sweep between two faces.  The
bridge command only makes an ugly linear sweep with no curvature.  So I got
sidetracked and did a bunch of other stuff instead.  If anyone knows how
though, please advise...

All it is is Wings3D and POV-Ray.  Pretty fun, really.  I suggest you try
