One of the first things I tried a few months ago was to make a hourglass
with a ferw thousand sand grains, I intersected the random placement
routine with a cone. They were still too big and took their sweet time to
render. I would imagine in your case render times would sky-rocket, so I'd
do as Thomas suggested instead.
